Ethan Hoffman shows youngsters how to use his Driver over obstacles. He is 9 years old and preparing for Tournaments. He consistently drives the ball straight as an arrow and always over 125 yards. This video shows that any age children can learn and enjoy the game of golf.
Ethan practices daily and is looking forward to compete once he reaches 12 years old. He also is actively involved in modeling and dance. Ethan prefers Callaway Irons but drives farther with his Taylor Made and Nike drivers. In addition, Ethan Hoffman was born with a kidney disorder called Barttersyndrome.

In celebrating our 15th birthday we welcomed the highest visitor attendance in our history, with nearly 30% more onsite visitors than in 2014 and a whopping 50% increase in the number of youth and students served through EMP s exhibits and programs. Our pop culture platform is clearly reverberating with visitors.
But navigating pop culture isn t always so clear. That s why our curatorial and programmatic focus shines a light on what resonates the culture quakes that swell from the margins to the mainstream. These pop culture movements ripple across time and geography, and serve as shared cultural touchstones that shape our contemporary society. As you ll see in the following pages, we presented exhibits that spanned the breadth of pop culture in 2015, from the costumes that captured our collective imaginations a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away to a five-apple-tall feline phenomenon who won the world s hearts; the limitless storytelling possibilities in science fiction to the nomadic final years of Jimi Hendrix s life celebrating this local artist who was the museum s founding inspiration. In fact, the culture quake left in Jimi Hendrix s wake continues to inspire us in our programming. Our youth programs seek to give voice to the young people in our community, no matter their back- ground, because everyone can find the creative outlet that resonates with them and build their confidence and agency as change makers and culture shakers.
This is the power of pop culture. We believe that creativity transcends genre, and we provide avenues for fans to gather and geek out and for aspiring artists to write (code, music, fiction you name it!) and rock out. We elevate our community s voice as a vote in curating what resonates. That s because everyone has value in pop culture, in all of its diversity.
Pop culture provides a way for each of us to be different. This report is for all of you who have helped make this year possible.

EMP S 15TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION On June 23, we honored the fans and the community that have helped shape EMP into the inspiring place that it is today at our 15th Birthday Bash. Jedis, 12s, Muggles, Trekkies, Makers, and musicians alike were invited to celebrate 15 years of pop culture with free admission, architecture tours of our iconic Frank O. Gehrydesigned building; performances from Sound Off!
Alumni including Emma Lee Toyoda, Maiah Manser, and Otieno Terry; and special appearances by EMP fans of every stripe, including: the Sea Gals, Harry Potter, R2-D2, the Dalek, Blue Thunder, and Jet City Saber Guild. Through interactive media and in-depth exhibitions, we foster an innovative community of creative seekers pushing the envelope in countless directions. Opposite page EMP s centerpiece IF VI WAS IX, by Seattle-based sound sculptor Trimpin, is formed of more than 500 instruments. 5 REBEL, JEDI, PRINCESS, QUEEN: STAR WARS AND THE POWER OF COSTUME OPENED JANUARY 31 EMP hosted the world premiere of this special exhibition, developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), which uncovered the intricate creative processes and remarkable artistry behind designing, dressing, decorating, and adorning an entire galaxy of Star Wars characters. Through nearly 60 hand-crafted costumes from all six blockbuster Star Wars films, insightful interviews with artists and designers, and interactive media and original notes, the exhibit inspired visitors to discover their favorite Star Wars characters like never before, and captured how the creative team brought these incredible visions to reality.
GRAND OPENING PARTY Special guests and Star Wars legends Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) and Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) kicked off the grand opening celebration, which included spotlight talks with Academy Award - winning costume designer Aggie Guerard Rodgers (Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi) and author Brandon Alinger (Star Wars Costumes: The Original Trilogy); as well as plenty of fan-centered activities that gave attendees an opportunity to pay tribute to their favorite characters across the Galactic Empire or New Republic depending on which side of The Force called to them! INFINITE WORLDS OF SCIENCE FICTION WILD BLUE ANGEL: HENDRIX ABROAD, George Takei (Hikaru Sulu) Actor OPENED JUNE 20 Wild Blue Angel: Hendrix Abroad, presented a contemplative look at how the legendary Jimi Hendrix drew inspiration from his life on the road. Amid an immersive gallery soundtrack featuring rare Hendrix interview clips, visitors traveled alongside the renowned artist and musical nomad with intimate notes, photographs, and original artifacts including his only passport, issued on the day he left for London on September 23, 1966; and his diary, where he recounts friends, shows, and experiences from the road, revealing how he made his home among the roar of the crowd and the electric embrace of his guitar. OPENED MARCH 28 Infinite Worlds of Science Fiction invited visitors to step aboard an interactive spacecraft packed with more than 150 artifacts from iconic films and television shows displaying the incredible range of storytelling found in science fiction: from Star Trek to H.G. Wells The War of the Worlds, from big-budget Men in Black to the Philip K. Dick-inspired Blade Runner to Ghostbusters. Within a dynamic and immersive space, the exhibit encouraged visitors to embark on their own space adventure, and to discover the power science fiction has to transform, motivate, and educate.
ZERO GRAVITY This sold-out grand opening celebration put sci-fi in the spotlight as EMP transformed into an epic interstellar vessel. Guest of honor George Takei, best known for his portrayal of Sulu on Star Trek: The Original Series, kicked off an evening in tribute to the vast and varied universes of science fiction with opening remarks and an enlightening Q&A session where he discussed the use of pop culture as a powerful vehicle for activism. Guests traveled across time and space through photo opportunities with the Star Trek command chair, TARDIS, and The Seattle Time Machine; science fiction trivia and games; a live performance from Starship EMP s house band The Beam Me Ups!; space-age dance party and oxygen bar; and the debut of Ninkasi Brewing Company s Space Beer, made from hops launched into outer space! Hailed as the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth, Maker Faire is a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness and a celebration of the maker movement: people not just hungry to talk about the next big thing, but to make it! Over the course of the weekend, more than 6,000 attendees tried out the latest inventions, activities, and talks that blended art, engineering, science, and technology from more than 100 exhibiting makers, presenters, and innovators as young as seven years old to corporate makers such as Microsoft. An array of impressive inventions emerged from our community, including a 50-ft. Snake robot (Titanoboa), the world s largest solar-powered tricycle (Daisy), and a coffee-making robot (Mugsy).
Among presentations on topics spanning from Northwest tech trends to resources for young makers-in-training was CEO of Maker Media and founder of Maker Faire, Dale Dougherty, who joined the lineup of speakers for a look back on the incredible first ten years of Maker Faire s global success. HIP-HOP ARTIST RESIDENCY This inaugural program, launched in collaboration with GRAMMY award-winning duo MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS and ARTS CORPS, is designed exclusively for underserved provides students with unprecedented, fully-subsidized creative career guidance and multidisciplinary mentorship expressed through performance-based hip-hop. In the pilot year, 18 aspiring artists received instruction and mentorship from dozens of musicians and industry professionals, including guest instructors Ben Haggerty of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Thig Nat of The Physics. They recorded an EP of their original music at PURPLE DOOR STUDIOS, and put on a final performance in EMP s Sky Church. Held annually since 2001, Sound Off!
Is the Northwest s premier 21 and under battle of the bands. Hip-hop group One Above Below None took the top prize at the 2015 Sound Off! It was a big win for the underdog band, who auditioned three times for Sound Off!
And squeezed into Finals during their last eligible year as the wild card winner. Members credited Cry Out!, a local non-profit that empowers youth through the arts, for bringing them together. Mercer Island rock band Naked Giants finished second, while folk singer-songwriter and Audience Favorite Emma Lee Toyoda finished third, ahead of indie band Bleachbear. Since taking the Sound Off! Title, One Above Below None has gone on to perform at Bumbershoot, Capitol Hill Block Party, and other venues throughout the region. COMMUNITY ACCESS PROGRAM The Access Partners program underscores our mission to make arts more readily inclusive, removing barriers for socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals and those deterred from visiting due to physical and other challenges. We build relationships with service organizations to collaboratively adapt programs or onsite experiences that are mission-driven and align with partners needs. Recent Access Partners have included: LAUNCH (children ages 3-12 from Seattle s lower-income districts), YOUTHCARE (homeless and at-risk teens), RED EAGLE SOARING NATIVE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS Professional Development offers certified clock hours training for pre-k to collegelevel teachers, integrating arts and technology skills that spark student engagement and use multiple learning styles to fuse pop culture with core subject curriculum. We offered the inaugural Summer STEAM Professional Development Week, which focused on deepening the best practices for the integration of arts into STEM education with hands-on projects and discussion of teaching practices. EMP is a vetted Community Partner of Seattle s CREATIVE ADVANTAGE as an approved provider of arts residencies and 21st century professional development training for public schoolteachers. CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS OUTREACH Offering subsidized in-school artist residencies, EMP s Curriculum Connections programs customize grades 3-12 content for uniquely integrated arts learning. Planned in cooperation between teachers and EMP s resident teaching artists, each weeklong in-school residency incorporates an artist-led field study conducted onsite at EMP, where students become the exhibiting artists.
EMP partnered with local schools: GARFIELD HIGH SCHOOL, WASHINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL, BROADVIEW-THOMSON K-8, ADAMS ELEMENTARY, HAZEL WOLF K-8 STEM, and two afterschool sites of LAUNCH. STUDENTS TRAINING IN ARTISTIC REACH The STAR (Students Training in Artistic Reach) program supports school and community group-based music ensembles by providing pre-professional coaching to impart the artistic skills and confidence to perform onstage, culminating with a live-audience concert in EMP s Sky Church.

THERE IS A REAL SENSE OF COMMUNITY THAT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TOGETHER BY THIS CONSCIOUS GROUP OF ARTISTS. IT S BEAUTIFUL. Delton Mosby Exhibiting Artist, Black History Month Responding to society s need for greater global awareness, EMP is dedicated to promoting dialogue and cultural understanding, and to making our museum a center for learning and civic engagement. We serve this mission by hosting programs which promote a diverse range of peoples and cultures. For the second year, we hosted ONE VIBE AFRICA S Madaraka Festival, a benefit concert and art showcase to empower youth in Kenya. Festivities included performances by global-reaching artists, including One Vibe s Global Ambassador Owuor Arunga. Closer to home, we celebrated Northwest Native cultures with Community Access Partner RED EAGLE SOARING NATIVE YOUTH THEATRE during Indigenous Cultures Day with a play by the organization s Seattle Indian Youth Arts and Performance program.
Over Memorial Day weekend, NORTHWEST FOLKLIFE returned to EMP with hosted panels and lectures in JBL Theater discussing the relationship between music, identity, and social justice movements. BLACK HISTORY MONTH We brought together some of Seattle s diverse and disparate cross-cultural factions to celebrate the artistic accomplishments of African Americans in our region. Presented by EMP and BRANDKINGS, the second annual Through the Eyes of Art showcased work from local visual artists and explored the theme of The Value of Black Life. City Councilmember Bruce Harrell served as emcee, and hip-hop heavyweights Talib Kweli and Draze performed to a sold-out crowd. NORTHWEST TAP CONNECTION youth presented a choreographed routine and opened up a discussion on the powerful influence of dance in urban communities, while speaker forums with CREATIVEMORNINGS and panelists who represent community leadership and its social innovators talked through issues of equity in the arts sector.
ONEBEAT SHARING OUT CONCERT ONEBEAT is an international cultural exchange that celebrates the transformative power of the arts through the creation of original music, and brings musicians from around the world to the U.S. To collaboratively develop strategies for arts-based social engagement. Musicians from OneBeat performed in Sky Church alongside youth music ensembles from SEATTLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, capping off a week-long project integrated into our extensive network of education programming. OneBeat musicians were invited to share their musicianship and personal stories with a group of talented young Seattle musicians including the SIMBA YOUTH MARIMBA ENSEMBLE, the ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL choir, BIG WORLD BREAKS percussion ensemble, and INGRAHAM HIGH SCHOOL choir. AN INSPIRING HUB FOR FANDOM EMP challenges expectations for what typical arts participation can look like by programming one-of-a-kind experiences for fans to actively engage with our content. This year we elevated the themes of EMP s galleries at MYTH & MAGIC FAIRE a spectacular family-friendly and fantasy-themed festival, 31 DAYS OF HORROR a monthlong celebration of the genre that included the annual FASHIONABLY UNDEAD BASH, and provided a place for fans to let loose at SEAHAWKS BLUE FRIDAYS and DOCTOR WHOLIDAYS. No matter what they re a fan of, EMP is a place where people can come together and celebrate what they re passionate about. CAMPOUT CINEMA Our Campout Cinema series brought the artifacts in our exhibits to life on EMP s mammoth Sky Church screen. For a modern-day drive-in feel, we invited attendees to get comfy and relax under LED stars on blankets, pillows, cushions, and sleeping bags from home. Every event offered a unique and super-themed movie-going experience for visitors, showing films tied to our gallery content. After a successful first year, the series expanded to include screenings of horror classics An American Werewolf in London, Scream, Return of the Living Dead, and Alien; fantasy and science fiction picks The Fifth Element and Legend; and a special holiday all-ages showing of Gremlins.
SCIENCE FICTION + FANTASY SHORT FILM FESTIVAL (SFFSFF) 10TH ANNIVERSARY Every year, SFFSFF aims to provide a venue for filmmakers to share visionary cinematic art, showcasing thoughtprovoking films that innovate, inspire, and challenge viewers with unconventional stories. Over the last decade, the festival has screened more than 200 films from countries spanning five continents. Previous films have been nominated for Academy Awards, featured in museum exhibitions, presented at major festivals around the world including the Sundance Film Festival, and received international awards and accolades. In celebration of the 10th anniversary, expanded programming included a live score of John Carpenter s 1981 cult classic Escape from New York, a new program of horrorthemed shorts, and a 10-year retrospective of SFFSFF s favorite and awardwinning films.

GAMING DAYS In support of our Indie Game Revolution exhibit, EMP was joined by partners NINTENDO, PIXELKIN, and DIGIPEN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY to present a weekend of video game programming for all ages that explored first-hand how the gaming community is pushing the envelope with new technology, creativity, and interactive possibilities. Attendees enjoyed a fun pop-up arcade with the latest games and indie releases from Nintendo, learned how to make their own games in design workshops with DigiPen and ROBLOX, and met gaming industry leaders and insiders through creative career panels hosted by Pixelkin.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT BY PIXELKIN. 13 INFLUENCERS CONCERT SERIES By bringing together up-and-coming artists with the established acts that inspired them, the new Influencers Concert Series celebrated how the greatest forms of creativity are often sparked by sharing in the creativity of others. Performers included hip-hop veterans De La Soul joined by Brothers from Another (Sound Off!
2012), Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks joined by Tomten (Sound Off! 2011), and Damien Jurado with Matt Bishop (of Hey Marseilles). POP CONFERENCE Pop Conference provides a rare opportunity for music scholars, critics, and fans to join in cultural and academic discourse on an array of issues in pop music. Through panels, presentations, and roundtable discussion, this year s theme, Get Ur Freak On: Music, Weirdness, and Transgression, explored notions of transgression, perversion, and the weird in music with topics ranging from Missy Elliott s envelope-pushing videos to the search for the Worst Song in the World.
We partnered with Seattle-based label HARDLY ART to present an evening of music from some of the region s most subversive bands, including TacocaT, Chastity Belt, S, and Childbirth; while Damon & Naomi (of Galaxie 500) presented a live soundtrack to Naomi Yang s short film Fortune. THE SHANNARA CHRONICLES MTV and SONAR ENTERTAINMENT partnered with EMP to celebrate the premiere of their epic new fantasy series, The Shannara Chronicles. Based on world-renowned author and Seattle native Terry Brooks international best-selling novel series, fans enjoyed exclusive screenings of the pilot episode in JBL Theater leading up to the show s public premiere as well as a display of magical props from the show. SHARING OUR PASSION FOR CREATIVITY IMPACT Throughout the year, EMP hosts community-driven events in an effort to be a home for Seattle s thriving cultural landscape. We supported several artistic events that brought together professional artists and the broader community, from the free monthly morning lecture series, CREATIVEMORNINGS, to the full day youth educational program on the music industry, CITY OF MUSIC CAREER DAY. We explored the themes of science fiction with BUSHWICK BOOK CLUB, who presented original musical performances inspired by Isaac Asimov s Foundation series, while our first TEDXRAINIER SALON hosted a panel of presentations where envisioned science bridged with what future-focused thinkers are beginning to see realized. On November 19, another extraordinary musician joined an exceptional group of honorees as we celebrated Jimmy Page for his unparalleled influence on music as a groundbreaking guitarist, legendary songwriter, and visionary producer. A dynamic lineup of musicians including RYAN BURNS, JERRY CANTRELL, ANDY COE, WILLIAM DUVALL, JEFF FIELDER, JOHN HOGG, BARRET MARTIN, DUFF MCKAGAN, RICK NIELSEN, KRIST NOVOSELIC, RICH ROBINSON, PAUL RODGERS, KIM THAYIL, and BRIAN WHEAT paid tribute to our honoree and Jimmy Page himself surprised everyone in the room when he jumped on stage to join the full cast of musicians for a knockout finale song.
EMP s all-star youth band who called themselves Turn the Page included members from EMP s Youth Advisory Board, participants of the museum s Teen Artist Workshops, and an alum from the inaugural Hip-Hop Artist Residency. The Founders Award Celebration is EMP s signature benefit event to support the museum s youth development programs. From songwriting to video game programming, EMP s programs and exhibits served 192,796 youth in 2015 with arts learning experiences and mentorship.
